A truly invigorating sensory experience.

Hand Sanitiser

It is evident that the design of hand sanitiser packaging (especially the carry-around bottles) is unconsidered and cheaply made. Sanitise® creates a multi-sensory experience where every element works together seamlessly to build a fulfilling user experience.

It begins when the user is visually attracted to the aesthetics of the product through their sense of sight. The visual appeal directs the user’s attention to the shape of the bottle, to its solid form which utilises balance and functionality.

The user will notice the material and the tactile sensation that it elicits. The opaque glass chosen for the final design adds grip to the product through its rough texture. This unique material will engage the user further, as the thick glass conveys quality and protects the bottle if is ever dropped. Even as the user feels the glass, they will sense the soft noise produced from the surface texture.

This sensory experience of sound is felt again when the user pops open the lid. Instantly, they will smell the fresh, pleasant scent of the sanitiser, a sharp contrast from the medical smell that the current design holds. The new design satisfies the user through fragrance, the scents selected so that they also engage a sense of taste.

Each variety of the product producing a different smell of flavour (mint, lemon, vanilla, and berry). By stimulating these various senses in a pleasurable flow, the new design creates a deep sensory experience.

Good design is sustainable (at least according to Dieter Rams).

It is clear that the new design is a more sustainable development of its predecessor through the combination of material, processes, and packaging that it provides. The processes being in the distribution system of the product – as the user values the product so highly, they will want to keep it – and the subscription service that will help to minimise waste. Ultimately, a circular economy can be created where excess is reduced.

This has the potential to shift culture into one of conservation, re-usability and hence, sustainability. The underlying notion that the design is sustainable because the user cherishes its alignment with their values could be adopted by society at large, and has potential to create a culture where user experience is prioritised through tailored products and service.
